improving well-being in the city

"The Polis Institute social indicator research is the best that we’ve seen. It clearly presents where and how to act in the city."

Eric Welch, Campus Crusade for Christ Global Cities Team

"Seeking the Welfare of the City" Report

Polis Institute was formed in response to this assessment of how human needs are met in Central Florida (2009). There are over 3800 service organizations in Central Florida and over three hundred of them were directly assessed in the research. While there are a great many working hard to alleviate distress, efforts do not tend to build capacity in our most distressed neighborhoods. The report outlines the methodology and findings of the research and provides recommendations for the community as a whole.

Program Measurements

Polis Institute provides custom program measurements and remediation plans that improve non-profit effectiveness. Our approach aligns programs with mission and mission with neighborhood and city well-being. These measurements will help you secure the funding and partnerships you need to succeed.

Demographic Reports

Polis Institute provides comprehensive demographic reports for the current year and five year projections. These reports cover 350 variables related to age, gender, race, ethnicity, household characteristics, income, housing value, marital status, industry types, and consumer spending.

Neighborhood Stress Index (NSI)

The NSI is a composite of family structure, income, housing, crime, and education levels for neighborhoods (U.S. Census Block Groups). The map on the left shows the NSI for Orange and Seminole Counties, Florida. There are 100 distressed neighborhoods (high NSI) in these two counties.

Asset Mapping

With the Polis Institute's Asset Connection Tool (ACT), community assets can not only be mapped but connected in powerful ways. Asset based approaches to community development focus on what is present in the community rather than what it lacks. This approach has proven to be an effective catalyst for improving community well-being.

Indicators of Community Health Report

This 2008 report details six key indicators of Community Health for Central Florida: family structure, housing, education, income, safety, and individual health. It served as the initial report of the "Seeking the Welfare of the City" research project at Reformed Theological Seminary.
