improving well-being in the city

A city's well-being can be measured and improved! Polis Institute is currently focused on doing just that in Greater Orlando. We use our own Neighborhood Stress Index and Gallup's Well-being Index to measure well-being. We also provide training to help further the building blocks of strong cities - healthy people, dignified relationships, and strong communities.
STRESS

WELL-BEING

There are 100 distressed neighborhoods in Orange and Seminole Counties. The Stress Index is a composite of income, education, family structure, housing, crime. Knowing the relative stress of our communities helps us know where to act but we do not believe that addressing any single issue will alleviate distress. Communities are strengthened through dignified relationships and the proper engagement of everyone's talents - community building.
Greater Orlando is ranked 116th out of 188 U.S. cities according to the Gallup Well-being Index. Polis is focused on improving that ranking through direct Community Building efforts in distressed areas and by training/coaching other non-profits and churches to align their programs with improving well-being. The Well-being Index assesses Life Evaluation, Basic Access, Work Environment, Healthy Behavior, Physical Health, and Emotional Health.
