It has helped me better understand that people, regardless of their circumstances, need to feel useful and that they can make a contribution.
-
It changed my perspective on serving others from a "give" mindset to a "give/receive" mindset. I learned everyone has assets and gifts regardless of current circumstances.
-
I now think of helping others in a far different way and see why the missions trips I have gone on were ineffective. I know I have now learned a more effective way.
-
I really like the idea of looking for assets and bringing my own needs to the table in any group I am striving to serve.
-
It has completely re-wired the way I relate and look at people in every aspect of my life: family, job and particularly ministry.
-
It was a great paradigm shift in the thinking of how to serve people. It feels so true that we do indeed strip people of their dignity when we try to serve. Dignity Serves is a great start to making the needed shift.
-
The class gave simple questions to catalyze relationship-building and a framework to think about how to be a servant.
-
The very first lesson, describing the idea that Christ is Dignity and Dignity Serves, was completely eye-opening. I'm not a "new" Christian and thought I had a good grasp on why we serve others. This course really did grow my perspective and show me what service is really about: interdependence. I wish this course would be taught to EVERYONE at our church and at churches throughout the nation.
-
It helped me to realize that I don't reach out to people that are different economically or racially. It helped me to think about what my motives are.
-
I realized that people are weary of helpers swooping in to save the day. You need to build up the relationship for them to be able to trust you and to wait for God to tell you what to do or not do. Change and development happen over time and I need to see it as a blessing when God chooses me to take part in it.
-
Helped me to see that there is a way to actually transform lives.
-
I better understand Christ's design for serving others.
-
It undergirded my understanding of service with sound theology.
-
I have been teaching in urban settings for 45 years. I have always focused on assets and strengths rather than deficits but have not had an opportunity to explore this area from a Christ centered/faith based perspective. I will be retiring in a few months and I gained a great deal of insight of what I want to do next.
-
It has made me much more aware that those living in urban communities need outside groups and individuals to be committed to stay and build trust over time, not just "trying to fix what's wrong" in these communities and then leave.
